Team Pegasus rider Emily Gray is preparing for a big 2019 off the back of her fantastic result in the CCI4* at Adelaide International Three-Day-Event, where she finished fourth in 2018.

Emily has some new additions to her stable: an exciting young showjumper, Be Wonderful, arriving from the east; a 4-year-old off-track Thoroughbred, Bart; and Tradie, a 6-year-old gelding by Bellario. These horses will be joining the stable’s seasoned campaigners: the eye-catching 2*-horse, Rio Tonto, and Emily’s longtime partner and 4*-horse, Jocular Vision. Emily is on the national youth squad and is pursuing new riding opportunities this year with the aim of achieving Australian selection. Emily is a fully qualified physiotherapist and works full-time as a physio in local practice. She has also begun working closely with Equestrian WA state squads on rider fitness.

After growing up in Kukerin, a small country town in the southwest wheatbelt of WA, Emily completed her physiotherapy degree at Curtin University. Her main interest lies in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, specifically sports physiotherapy, a passion that extends from her own sporting background. She also enjoys taking clinical Pilates classes and using dry needling as part of her treatments to help clients on their health journey. Her knowledge of the requirements and stresses of sport gives her a unique insight into the treatment of various injuries that occur while riding, and puts her in a position to provide specifically tailored treatment to equestrians requiring physiotherapy.

“I am passionate about seeing my clients improve and progress through their treatment and rehabilitation. I am devoted to providing clients with the highest level of care and helping them return to optimal, pain-free function,” said Emily.

Emily’s dedication to her sport, horses, and profession allows her to combine her two passions as she strives to reach her goals. She recognises the importance of correct nutrition on muscle function and sporting performance, and works closely with Michelle Meylan, a Milne Equine nutrition advisor, to ensure her horses are receiving the nutrients they need for a balanced diet.

Jocular Vision and Rio Tonto are fed Pegasus Liberty and Equi-Jewel to keep them in top condition. The low-starch, high-fat, high-fibre content of Pegasus Liberty makes it ideal for providing the energy and nutrients the horses need, whilst reducing the incidence of grain-related problems such as fizzy temperament, tying-up, and hindgut acidosis. Each horse receives a regular dietary assessment, and each has a tailored feeding program. Given Emily’s attention to detail, Michelle also assists with hay analysis and selection. Keep an eye out for updates from Emily and join us for the next Milne-EWA Education Seminar focusing on rider fitness, biomechanics, injury prevention, and treatment.
