Be Safe if You Ride During Hunting Season

Though dates vary from state to state, fall is the traditional deer-hunting season in many areas. Riders who stay off the trails during this time might flock back into the woods when the season closes, but actually, many states allow year-round hunting of small prey like rabbits. Though hunters might venture out at any time of year, trail riders should be able to enjoy their rides if they take reasonable precautions to avoid being mistaken for a deer or rabbit. These include:
- Ride during the middle of the day when lighting is good. Many hunters, especially those looking for deer and turkeys, will most often be in the woods very early in the morning or in late afternoon.
- Wear bright colors for high visibility. Blaze-orange is the traditional “safe” color that is easy to see, but any vivid color will help you stand out against a background of trees and brush.
- If possible, ride in open areas or semi-cleared woods rather than through thickly forested land.
- Check with land owners before crossing private property. The owner will probably know whether anyone is hunting in the area you want to cross.
Carry a cell phone in your pack or pocket (not attached to the horse or the saddle) in case someone is injured in spite of your precautions.
