Reports from the Field: New MFM Pellet
MFM Pellet™ features key amino acids and high-quality protein to protect muscle from oxidative stress and to rebuild damaged muscle fibers in horses with myofibrillar myopathy (MFM), a recently identified muscular disorder seen in Warmbloods and endurance Arabians.
Developed through collaboration with leading myopathy research Stephanie Valberg, D.V.M., Ph.D., Dipl. ACVIM, ACVSMR, MFM Pellet was recently introduced to the market. One early user was dressage trainer Erin Jorgensen, who turned to the product to see if it would help a young Warmblood in training.
“I have a young horse that I have struggled with as far as his ability to perform comfortably. I have trained several horses from Training Level to Grand Prix and the feel of this horse just had me stumped,” she noted. “He was always hesitant and in warm-up, after 20 minutes of walking on trails, he would feel like an old, lame pony.”
“MFM Pellet started helping within three days. He has been on it for a month now, and he’s like a different horse. He warms up like a normal horse and now actually has some suspension in his strides! I am so thankful I found this product!” she said.
MFM Pellet contains several important amino acids and branched-chain amino acids, which are used as substrates for energy production in skeletal muscle. Research in human athletes has shown that BCAA may stimulate protein synthesis and delay onset of fatigue. Learn more about MFM Pellet.
“In our studies, horses with MFM improved considerably once their diets were modified to include the recommended ratios of energy sources and MFM Pellet to support muscle repair and recovery,” Dr. Valberg said. If you are using MFM Pellet on a horse diagnosed with or suspected of having MFM, we’d like to gather your feedback on its progress over time. Learn more about our continuing research here.
