Kentucky Equine Research interns work hands-on with the resident horses, managing their daily care and their involvement in scientific studies. Because the horses have dispositions all their own, including a bit of quirkiness at times, each intern tends to click with a different horse.

“My personal favorite is King, specifically because of his distinctive personality,” says former research intern Brittney Williams. “He is intelligent and can be quite opinionated about the things you ask him to do. I often find him near his buddy Pepe, a much more nervous horse who relies on King’s calmer nature. Despite King’s attempts at hiding his softer side, he loves face rubs, neck scratches, and snuggles at night check.”

Kentucky Equine Research has around 40 horses on staff, between racehorses in training, a sport horse division, and career research horses. Learn more about the herd.

The Kentucky Equine Research internship program offers the practical experience necessary to understand and implement research protocol and imparts the skills necessary to assist in the everyday management of a large and busy research facility, often interfacing scientific design with practical solutions.
