The latest seminar in the Milne-EWA Education Seminar was held last week, with Dr. Peter Harding, and centered around practical injury prevention, treatment, and management. The night was hugely popular and well attended, as injury prevention and treatment is a common focus of many horse owners and performance stables.

Dr. Harding explained common causes of injury with a focus on soft tissue injuries and osteoarthritis. He outlined the anatomical structure of equine limbs and discussed the pressures of loading and weight-bearing during exercise. He went on to address the treatments (many!) available, discussing the different costs and outcomes. The talk also looked at user-friendly management tools for typical performance horse injuries.

Hailing from a beef and sheep farm in the southern tablelands of NSW, Pete completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne. Since graduating, Pete has worked in Australia and the UK before completing a residency in equine medicine and surgery at Murdoch University. Pete completed a research Master’s degree in 2011. In 2013, he successfully passed the American College of Veterinary Surgeons Diplomate examinations and is recognized as a registered specialist in equine surgery. Pete spent two years in the role of resident surgeon for one of Melbourne’s largest equine practices before returning to the west. He has a keen interest in lameness diagnosis and airway dysfunction, and enthusiasm for all things surgical! We thank him for giving his time and expertise to present at the seminar.
