Dr. Peter Huntington, director of nutrition for Kentucky Equine Research Australasia, presented at the 2019 National Equine Industry Forum in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The forum was presented by the Veterinary Service Department of Malaysia, the Malaysian Equine Council, and the Malaysian Totalisator Board.

Huntington’s presentation focused on equine health and nutrition in the tropics, including 10 key issues for horses in the region: lack of nutrition knowledge, heat stress, lack of grazing or poor-quality grasses, low forage intakes, reliance on imported hay and feed, suboptimal body condition, reliance on feed made for other animals, poor nutrient balance, overuse of imported supplements, and a tendency to feed all horses the same. He discussed ways to address these issues to increase the health, welfare, and performance of horses in Malaysia.

Huntington continued with an emphasis on developing individual feeding programs based on a horse’s specific needs and methods for establishing individual feeding programs.
