Question
My mare has a history of laminitis and equine glandular gastric disease (EGGD). She is currently being treated with misoprostol and sucralfate. She will be rescoped soon, and I am looking for a product to prevent future ulcers. She is on a very controlled low-sugar, low-starch diet. Which of your products would be best?
Answer
We would recommend RiteTrac and ReSolvin EQ.
RiteTrac would be a beneficial when your mare comes off misoprostol and sucralfate. When those medications are removed, there is often an acid rebound effect that can increase the chances of acid damaging the newly healed stomach lining. RiteTrac provides total digestive tract protection (foregut and hindgut) through a proprietary blend of ingredients, including EquiShure. RiteTrac also features antacids and coating agents that quickly neutralize excess gastric acid and protect the stomach lining. In addition to daily use, RiteTrac can also be used periodically anytime a horse may become stressed to help buffer the stomach and prevent ulcers from forming.
ReSolvin EQ includes the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA as well as another anti-inflammatory fatty acid known as GLA. These three fatty acids work together to help mediate the immune response, decreasing the inflammation through the production of anti-inflammatory eicosanoids. Horses in one research study showed improved ulcer scores, and some showed full resolution of their ulcers after 90 days. ReSolvin EQ works over the long term, helping horses heal ulcers and prevent the inflammatory environment that leads to their development.
Both products will support your mare’s gastric health. I have linked some articles below that I think you might find interesting.
