Question

My horse sweats profusely during trailering—imagine puddles of sweat on the trailer floor and soaking wet from chest to flank. I would like to use Restore Paste for a 10-hour trailer ride. Would you recommend administering the paste before the trip, once or twice during the trip, and again upon arrival? He weighs about 1,000 lb (450 kg) and is generally calm and dependable.

Answer

Our recommendation would be to administer Restore Paste the night before the horse is set to leave. This will encourage him to drink, and he will start the travel day better hydrated. Depending on the frequency and length of stops along the way, it might be advisable to give one-half tube at a time, and let the horse take frequent sips of water during rest stops.

If you’re not taking a significant rest during which the horse can slowly consume water, we would suggest waiting to administer another tube until you reach your destination.

Follow up with one more tube the next morning to fully restore electrolyte levels and to encourage ongoing consumption of water.

Although you mention your horse is usually tractable, he may become anxious during travel. Digestive health support, such as RiteTrac (or other products in Australia), can be added to his feed before and after travel to help soothe his stomach, particularly if you do not use omeprazole as part of his travel protocol.
