Question

Is it possible that Bio-Bloom PS can have a positive effect on a club foot?

Answer

Club foot is the abnormal contraction of the deep flexor tendon that can put pressure on the coffin joint and cause changes to the hoof’s biomechanics. Club foot can be present at birth or develop early in a horse’s life. The deformity may be mild to severe.

Depending on your horse’s age, there are different management options available. These should be discussed with a knowledgeable veterinarian and farrier.

Outside of the first few months of life, nutrition is not going to have a notable effect on hoof biomechanics. But what it can do is to help provide the nutrients needed to keep the hoof growing, which can give your veterinarian and farrier healthier hoof wall on which to work corrective shoeing.

Bio-Bloom PS (or Bio-Bloom HP in Australia and certain other countries) contains key nutrients (biotin, methionine, iodine, chelated zinc) to improve hoof quality. The zinc in Bio-Bloom PS is a specific type (chelated zinc methionine) known to improve hoof growth. This zinc methionine, when fed with 15 mg biotin and 3 g methionine, resulted in greater growth of the tubular horn of the hoof wall than biotin alone. The combination accelerates hoof growth and sole depth, both of which would be beneficial.

Depending on the advice of your veterinarian and farrier, Bio-Bloom PS would be a good supplement choice to provide them with better quality hoof on which to try treatment options.
