Equine Disease Incidence Around the World

According to Equine Disease Quarterly published by the University of Kentucky, outbreaks of various equine diseases occurred during the second quarter of 2014.

European horses were struck by strangles, influenza, equine piroplasmosis, equine arteritis virus infection, and anaplasmosis, among other illnesses. South Africa reported several cases of African horse sickness, and equine piroplasmosis was found in United Arab Emirates.

Asia had outbreaks of diseases caused by EHV-1 and 4, while Australia reported one case of equine Hendra virus. South America reported several diseases including abortion that were caused by equine herpesvirus strains.

North American horses developed vesicular stomatitis, strangles, abortion and neurologic disease caused by EHV-1, equine infectious anemia, salmonellosis, clostridial enteritis, and eastern equine encephalomyelitis.
