Statistics Show Impact of Indiana’s Horse Industry

The horse industry was responsible for over $2 billion in revenue each year, according to a Purdue University study released late in 2011. The industry provides more than 15,000 direct and indirect jobs. Although only about 7% of jobs are related to racing or breeding, these industry segments provided more than half the total revenue and 60% of the jobs.
The state has two racetracks, Hoosier Downs and Indiana Downs, both of which host racing by Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, and Quarter Horses. Thoroughbred racing had the highest wagering, totaling over $155,000,000 on average per racing day.
