Question

What is the difference between powdered and pelleted electrolytes?

Answer

The primary difference between pelleted and powdered electrolytes is concentration. Generally, twice as much of the pellet must be fed to get the same amount of electrolytes into a horse. The difference in concentration pertains to the pelleting process. In order to create a pellet, the electrolyte needs to be mixed with other ingredients that will help form the pellet, like alfalfa meal. If a horse will not eat the powdered electrolyte, then the pelleted form is a reasonable option.

With that in mind, look closely at the label of any electrolyte before purchasing, whether it is in a pellet or powder form. There should be very little sugar included. Typically, the more sugar, the fewer electrolytes. Make sure the first ingredient is sodium chloride or salt for the powder and that sodium chloride is in the ingredient listing before sugar, dextrose, or sucrose for the pellet.
